Jean Craighead George, author of revered children’s titles, My Side of the Mountain and Julie of the Wolves, passed away at the age of 92 last week.
To read about her life and how her love of animals and nature effected her books, see this New York Times article.
At one point, George’s home contained 173 pets, not counting cats or dogs. Guests were warned to “remove the owl” after showering. She did extensive research in Alaska before penning Julie of the Wolves, and her own two brothers grew up to be naturalists who studied Grizzly Bars. One of the first to foray into children’s survivalist themed literature, George left her mark in the minds of all who cracked the spines of her books, and will not soon be forgotten.
